Sometimes, You Finally Overcome the Monster

So this is it—the moment my life decided to become a courtroom drama I never auditioned for. I genuinely thought I'd make it through life without ever setting foot in a courthouse, but here we are. And my ex? I knew he had his flaws, sure, but I never imagined he was capable of this level of calculated manipulation. All that time together and I completely missed the signs that he was willing to drag me through hell just to get what he wanted. I feel like such an idiot for not seeing it coming. Guess I'm learning the hard way that some people will surprise you in the worst possible ways.

So, after life had finally started to settle and I was just getting used to the new rhythm of things, I get a call from a name I didn’t recognize. Never heard of the guy, never heard from him. The name? Leo. Turns out, Leo wasn’t some random dude trying to sell me insurance—nope, he was a lawyer. And what does he want? To ask if I knew my ex. Guess it’s time to give Mr. Charming a fake name, so let’s call him Edward—because, well, he’s about as much of a knight in shining armor as a soggy cardboard cutout.

Turns out, I really wasn’t wrong about holding on to all those receipts. Because Leo wasn’t just calling me, he was representing three other women who had also been in relationships with Edward. And guess what? They all had receipts. The kind of receipts that prove just how much of a mess he was. The kind that had me wondering if this guy had a whole secret life he was running like a bad reality show.

Turns out, I wasn’t the only one he’d shoved around, beaten down, and drained dry—like some kind of emotional vampire. I wasn’t the only girl he’d harassed and robbed blind. I was just the next name on a list. And, oh yeah, I was also the first American he’d managed to pull this crap on. Lucky me, right?

But then, Leo calls me again, and this time it’s like my whole world does a backflip. There’s another girl. Yeah, you heard that right—another one. So now, we weren’t just a sad little quartet. No, now we were five. A whole damn support group, brought together by Edward and his special brand of stupidity. It’s like we were all in some twisted club we never signed up for.

There was Claire. She was the one who started this whole crusade to take Edward down. He broke her clavicle and used her like a human ATM. Then there was Elizabeth—he bought her a ring, promised her forever, and then snapped her finger like it was a twig. Maria... well, with Maria, it was a different kind of broken. We didn’t talk about the details, but we all felt it in our bones, understood it without saying a word. Then there was me—obviously—and you know what happened there. If you don’t, well, you might want to go back and read my previous posts. Finally, there was Amelia. Another victim. He used her up, tossed her aside like she was nothing.

Five of us. Five stories. Five reasons why we were all scarred—and none of us ever planned on letting this guy get away with it again.

But little did we know, the worst was still ahead. One of the first things we discovered was just how much our lives had intertwined without us even knowing. It started with Claire, then moved to Elizabeth, who Edward had reached out to using a burner phone he didn’t even try to hide. From there, it continued: Elizabeth to Maria, where he spun this story about how they weren’t really together and he was “just on vacation.” Then from Maria to me, and I found out that while he was with me, he was texting her, sending the same messages, doing the exact same things.

But the worst of it all came when I learned what had happened between me and Amelia. I still can’t shake it—the thought that while I was home, grieving the loss of our child, he was out at work, and then going to her. I was too broken, and he took advantage of that.

As if all that wasn’t enough, there were a few more revelations that were going to change everything for all of us.

Then we found out Amelia had just had a baby girl. Conner’s little sister. That’s when I completely lost it. I felt like everything inside of me just shattered. I was furious, but also broken in ways I couldn’t even describe. Honestly, I’m glad I found out while I was with my therapist, because if I had been alone, I think I would’ve broken something.

Finding out that Conner had a half-sister, that she was safe—that was a relief, in some way. But it didn’t make things better. It just felt… odd. Part of me was glad she’d be spared from the same chaos we’d been through, but the other part of me felt this crushing sadness that she’d never know her brother. She wouldn’t even know about the life he should’ve had.

I wasn’t angry at Amelia. She didn’t know. But I was angry at everything—at Edward, at the world, at the universe for letting this happen. But the most bizarre part? That was still to come.

I had forgotten about my accounts. I’d reported my email, Facebook, and Snapchat as stolen, thinking that would be the end of it. Some things were deleted, others? Used in ways I never imagined. Then, we found out there was one more person to add to our group: Sema. She’d seen the red flags long before she ever met him in person. Smart enough to cancel her trip and block him before anything could happen.

But what she didn’t know was that he had something I hadn’t even considered—access to my accounts. And with that, he used my words, my life, everything he could to tear her down. To manipulate her. He didn’t even need to meet her. He already had the tools to hurt her. And once again, I felt that familiar sting in my chest—how this man could still reach out and destroy, even from a distance.

But we had the receipts. We had the proof of everything he’d done—medical records, police reports, even hidden photos that documented the hurt and pain he’d inflicted on all of us. Every single piece of evidence was there. And it worked. He was arrested. Put on trial. We all spoke. I couldn’t bear the thought of going in person, so I sent a video message instead. Did it help? In some ways, yes. It showed how much Edward had destroyed me. But in other ways, no. The stress was so overwhelming that it caused things to spiral. (If you want the full story, you’ll have to go back and read my earlier posts.)

What happened after all that, you might be wondering? Well, he’s in jail. 25 years, if I remember correctly. But of course, that wasn’t the end of it. Edward, being Edward, just couldn’t leave well enough alone.
